In recognition of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority’s (the ‘Authority’ or ‘NSIA’) pivotal contributions to advance health care delivery through sustained investments in medical infrastructure, the United States Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, Marisa Lago recently paid a courtesy visit to the NSIA – LUTH Cancer Centre (‘NLCC’) in Lagos.
Established in 2019, the NLCC – a Joint Venture between the NSIA Healthcare Development Investment Company (‘NHDIC’) and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (‘LUTH’) – is an out-patient oncology centre within LUTH, focused on delivering premium cancer care in Nigeria.
Since its inception, the NLCC has significantly improved the outcomes for cancer patients by attending to over ten thousand (10,000) unique patients.
Additionally, NLCC has by its operations catalysed key socio-economic outcomes including job creation, foreign exchange preservation by the reduction of medical tourism on account of cancer, and capacity enhancement in radiation treatment for key medical personnel.
NLCC remains a high-priority expression of the NSIA’s Nigeria Infrastructure Fund aimed at advancing cancer care and showcasing the opportunities available through investments in medical infrastructure.
To achieve its objective of optimising outcomes for cancer patients in Nigeria, the NLCC is equipped with medical infrastructure from internationally renowned Original Equipment Manufacturers including American brands like Varian Medical Systems (Siemens Healthineers) and GE Healthcare.
The courtesy visit by the US Under Secretary of State was in recognition of the NSIA’s role in cancer care especially through investments in medical infrastructure, corresponding capacity enhancement for critical stakeholders and expansion of possibilities for cancer patients.
The courtesy visit was also to explore additional opportunities to deepen the already existing synergy between the NSIA and the United States within the oncology value chain.
Speaking at the courtesy visit, the MD NHDIC, Dr Tolulope Adewole noted that ‘the NLCC is a critical expression of the NSIA to improve health care delivery for cancer patients. It aligns with the Authority’s commitment to ensure affordable and efficient cancer care for Nigerians. By equipping the centre with world-class medical infrastructure, we are positioned to alleviate the burden of cancer.’
Further commenting at the courtesy visit, Mr Aminu Umar-Sadiq, MD/CEO of the NSIA added that ‘strategic investments in medical infrastructure to sustainably improve the standard of health care delivery in Nigeria is a major component of our institutional priorities and aligns with our ESG focus.
Our additional investments in two medical diagnostic centres located within the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and the Federal Medical Centre underscore our keen focus on medical infrastructure as a sustainable pathway to improve healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
The Authority’s plan to build twenty-three (23) new modern medical diagnostic centres, three additional Oncology centres, and seven Catheterization Laboratories across the country’s six geopolitical zones is further proof of our drive to ensure enhanced access to high-quality healthcare in Nigeria.
NSIA’s wholly owned healthcare diagnostics portfolio company called MedServe has been set up with the mandate to actualize these projects.
